Non-Adherence is Hurting Your Quality Measures and Patient Outcomes.

Non-fulfillment

Medication is prescribed but never filled or started by the patient.

Non-persistence

The patient discontinues the medication without consulting their healthcare provider.

Non-conforming

The patient does not take the medication as directed (e.g., missed doses, incorrect timing, or improper administration).

Each of these forms of non-adherence is a widespread issue that significantly impacts patient outcomes and healthcare performance metrics. The effects can be far-reaching, influencing not just individual patient health but also the overall performance of your practice. Let’s explore the deeper consequences of non-adherence and its impact on healthcare outcomes.

Consequences of Non-Adherence

Addressing non-adherence is crucial for dramatically improving patient outcomes and reducing these associated risks.

Increased Hospitalizations

Non-adherence accounts for about 50% of treatment failures and 25% of hospitalizations in the U.S. annually.

Higher Mortality

It contributes to approximately 125,000 preventable deaths each year.

Increased Healthcare Costs

Reducing non-adherence could save between $100 and $300 billion in healthcare costs annually.

Polypharmacy Risks

Patients, especially those over 65, are often prescribed multiple medications. Taking five or more increases the risk of adverse drug reactions by 50%, and that risk doubles for patients taking 20 or more.

Decreased Quality of Life

Multiple medications can lead to drug interactions, duplicate therapies, and adverse reactions, all of which reduce the patient’s quality of life.
