6 Eye Symptoms You Shouldn’t Brush Off

6 Eye Symptoms You Shouldnt Brush Off - Klingensmith Drug Stores

Reviewed by a licensed pharmacist at Klingensmith’s Drug Stores, proudly serving Western Pennsylvania communities with trusted personalized care since 1940.

Most serious eye problems don’t begin with sudden vision loss. They usually start with small changes that seem harmless at first. A little blur at night. A bit of dryness. Maybe a few floaters.

We hear this all the time at the pharmacy from folks who thought it would just go away. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn’t.

Usually, patients come in thinking it was just screen fatigue, only to find they needed updated prescriptions. And honestly, sometimes fatigue is all it is. But not always. When it comes to your vision, it’s just not worth taking any chances, don’t you think? As pharmacists, we often help patients sort through these symptoms.

During Healthy Vision Month 2026, we want to help you recognize eye symptoms you shouldn’t ignore so you can take action early and protect your sight.

So, let’s take a quick look at those symptoms so you know what to watch out for.

The 6 Eye Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Here are six of the most common eye symptoms people have a tendency to ignore, but shouldn’t.

1. Blurry Vision at Night

Driving at night should feel routine. When it starts to feel stressful, something has likely changed. Blurry vision at night is often one of the earliest signs that something is off. You might notice glare from headlights, halos around lights, or trouble reading road signs until you’re much closer than usual.

These changes can be linked to cataracts, astigmatism, and sometimes even dry eye. Yep! Dry eye might have been the problem all along. Even mild dryness can make night vision worse because your tear film helps focus light clearly. But you can’t automatically chalk it up to dry eye.

According to the Mayo Clinic, cataracts commonly cause glare and difficulty seeing at night.

What we recommend:

Start simple. Lubricating drops like iVizia can improve clarity if dryness is part of the issue. If it continues, that’s usually the point where we suggest scheduling an eye exam.

2. Dry, Gritty, or Burning Eyes

Dryness is one of the most common complaints we hear, especially from patients who spend a lot of time on screens or in dry indoor air.

Common dry eyes symptoms include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Redness
  • Blurry vision that improves with blinking
  • A scratchy feeling

The National Eye Institute explains that dry eye happens when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or the right type of tears.

Screen time plays a big role. We tend to blink less when focusing on devices, which dries the surface of the eye.

What helps:

  • Artificial tears like iVizia
  • Allergy relief drops like Pataday, if itching is present
  • A quick conversation with our pharmacists to find the right option for your symptoms

3. Eye Fatigue and Frequent Headaches

By the end of the day, many people notice their eyes feel heavy or strained, especially after hours on a computer or phone. Headaches often follow.

Digital eye strain is one of the most common eye fatigue causes today. Have you ever heard of computer vision syndrome? Yes, it’s a real thing.

The American Optometric Association links prolonged screen use to blurred vision, discomfort, and headaches (aka digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome).

You might notice aching around your eyes or trouble keeping things in focus after long periods of reading or scrolling.

What helps:

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule
  • Use lubricating drops during screen time
  • Ask us to review your medications

Some medications can contribute to dryness and make symptoms worse. That’s where a quick conversation with the pharmacist can help sort things out.

4. A Sudden Increase in Floaters

Floaters are those small specks or threads that drift across your vision. Most people notice them as they get older.

Understanding eye floater causes can help you know when they are harmless and when they need attention. The American Academy of Ophthalmology explains that floaters usually come from natural changes in the gel inside your eye. In most cases, they are not dangerous.

But here’s when we want you to act quickly:

  • A sudden burst of new floaters
  • Flashes of light
  • A shadow or curtain in your vision

These symptoms can point to a retinal issue that needs immediate care.

5. Trouble Focusing or Changing Vision

Vision that feels inconsistent is often brushed off, but we talk through it with patients more often than you might expect.

You might find yourself squinting more, struggling to switch between near and far distances, or noticing that your vision seems to shift throughout the day. We often see people wait months before mentioning this, assuming it is just part of getting older.

The National Eye Institute notes that blurred vision can result from refractive errors, health conditions, or issues on the eye’s surface.

6. Red, Itchy, or Irritated Eyes

Redness and irritation come up often, especially during allergy season here in Pennsylvania. Sometimes it is allergies. Sometimes it is dryness. Occasionally, it points to something that needs a closer look.

What helps:

  • Pataday for allergy-related irritation
  • Visine for occasional redness relief
  • Guidance from a Klingensmith pharmacist is important so you don’t end up relying too heavily on redness drops

We regularly help patients avoid overusing these products, which can actually worsen redness over time.

When to See a Doctor for Eye Symptoms

Some symptoms should never be ignored. Knowing when to see a doctor for eye symptoms can make a real difference in protecting your vision.

Seek care right away if you notice:

  • Sudden vision changes
  • New floaters or flashes
  • Eye pain
  • Persistent redness
  • Partial or complete vision loss
